Estate Farms

Some of the fine quality coffees are grow by larger estates that have been in the same family for generations. These families are not smallholder farmers, but they are usually leaders in producing and processing a fine coffee yielding an excellent cup. THRIVE Farmers works with Estate Farmers for several reasons:

First, our estate farmer partners have a heart for the smallholder farmers around them and seek to help the neighboring smallholder with processing infrastructure and agricultural expertise.

Second, our estate farmer partners are leaders in the coffee industry in their respective countries, and strategic partnership with them benefits smallholder farmers in the long run.

Finally, the estate producers are capable of producing higher volumes of coffee that meet the quality standards needed to consistently supply large enterprise clients. This becomes the “bedrock” that allows multiple smallholders to come into the partnerships, which can then be grown over time. Without the estates as a crucial part of the mix, scale could not be achieved.

Monte Rosa

inset-photo43Monte Rosa is the farm of Oscar Moreira and his wife Lydia Matamoros. Monte Rosa is situated in the western valley of Costa Rica, one of the most-respected regions in Costa Rica for producing high-yield, specialty-grade coffee.

Monte Rosa has been producing coffee for over four generations. Lydia’s father was well-known for bringing about positive changes for the coffee farmers in the region. He also founded the mill that has become Coope Naranjo, one of the largest coops in Costa Rica. When Oscar and Lydia inherited Monte Rosa, it was Oscar and Lydia’s dream to save the land from foreclosure and preserve her father’s legacy. Over time, they purchased land from their cousins and brothers and created the current estate coffee farm that now produces several containers of coffee each year.

Monte Rosa is an innovator in vertically integrated coffee production. A wet mill, dry mill and roastery are part of their beneficio. Their specialty-grade green coffee is sold through the THRIVE model and their remaining coffee is roasted on-site and sold for local consumption.

With a commitment for achieving a better life for their employees, Oscar and Lydia have invested into their farm by building houses on-site for their seasonal laborers. They also provide scholarship programs for their worker’s children. Without the THRIVE model, their coffee would be sold on the open market without the certainty that they would be able to continue to grow the business. With THRIVE, Oscar and Lydia can feel secure that they can make the investments that will ensure continued production of the highest quality coffee.

Finca San Sebastian & El Tempixque

The partnership with the Falla Family yields a two-fold impact: First, Estuardo Falla and his family have a heart for the smallholder farmers around them, and they seek to help the neighboring smallholder with processing infrastructure and agricultural expertise. Second, Estuardo Falla is a leader in the coffee industry in Guatemala, and strategic partnership with him and his family benefits smallholder farmers in the long run and the surrounding community.
